The Service List Registry is simplifying the adoption and deployment of online service discovery for audiovisual media services.
The DVB Project developed the DVB-I specification to provide an open standard for the online service discovery of media through service lists. The full DVB-I specification is published as a detailed standards document.
To facilitate and accelerate adoption of the specification, the Service List Registry has developed and documented an Application Programming Interface that allows developers to use DVB-I without requiring detailed knowledge of the standard.
The key to opening DVB-I to developers is an OpenAPI specification or OAS. This is a declarative document notation that has become a widely used standard for defining HTTP-based application programming interfaces. It provides concise yet comprehensive documentation and code examples in a machine-readable format.
This immediately makes DVB-I accessible to a much broader community of developers already familiar with working with OpenAPI specifications in other contexts. It is designed to be self-documenting and easily understood. It represents a practical working model of DVB-I that developers can engage with more easily.
In addition to XML, OpenAPI natively supports lightweight responses in JSON, a language-independent format that is readily readable and easily consumable by software clients, including HbbTV and other browser applications. These responses are specified in standard JSON Schema notation to facilitate software validation and testing.
An OpenAPI specification can also be rendered as an interactive HTML document, enabling developers to explore a practical implementation without prior knowledge of DVB-I. Developers can construct requests and view real responses on the page. Rather than having to read about the specification, they can use it.
The draft OpenAPI specification will be available through the Service List Registry web site at slrdb.org.
DVB is an industry-led consortium of the world's leading media and technology companies working together to design open technical specifications for digital media delivery.
The Service List Registry is a federated online directory of audiovisual media services, based on open standards. Registered regulators, media providers, and distributors can manage lists of offerings available online and through traditional broadcast networks. This enables compatible devices, displays and applications with different capabilities to discover and access relevant services from multiple sources, offering users choice, convenience and control, on any screen.
