HbbTV application discovery

The Service List Registry enables devices and displays to discover HbbTV applications using service information in a broadcast signal or watermark codes embedded in audiovisual media.

HbbTV Application Discovery over Broadband or ADB is an open specification developed by the HbbTV Association and published as ETSI standard TS 103 464.

ADB can be used to discover an HbbTV application associated with a service in the absence of a broadcast Application Information Table or AIT.

HbbTV applications can therefore be supported where distribution networks do not provide the necessary application signalling.

  • DVB-SI Service Information can provide a unique reference to a broadcast service.
  • Audio and video watermarks can be used to encode a unique reference directly in the media.

A compatible device or display will use the Service List Registry to resolve the online location of the associated application.

The Service List Registry is the exclusive global provider of domain name resolution services for HbbTV ADB.
